An introduction to

human design

The study of the mechanics behind our energy and choices.

guide to your energetic design.

Human Design is a modern system introduced in 1987 by Ra Uru Hu. It draws on several symbolic and scientific lineages – including the I Ching, Astrology, the Chakra system, and Kabbalah – and maps them into a single framework.

The BodyGraph, which sits at the centre of the system, shows how each person is designed to exchange energy with the world. Rather than prescribing who you should be, Human Design invites recognition of what already functions naturally within you.

Human Design explores:

Type – how energy interacts with the environment
Strategy – how to meet life with less resistance
Authority – where clarity arises in the body
Centres, Channels, Gates – nuances of expression and awareness
Profiles and Life Themes – repeating patterns and potentials

It approaches identity as movement, not a fixed label. There is no hierarchy here. Every configuration has purpose.

The Five Types

There are five Types in Human Design: Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, and Reflector. Each describes a different way of interacting with energy, making decisions, and moving through life

Manifestor

Independent initiators who can create movement without waiting on anyone else.

Strategy: Inform others before taking action
Signature: Peace – a sense of freedom and flow
Sign of Resistance (Not-Self Theme): Anger – usually when they feel blocked or controlled

Consistent life-force energy that thrives when responding to what feels interesting or engaging.

Strategy: Respond to what shows up
Signature: Satisfaction – work that feels meaningful and alive
Sign of Resistance (Not-Self Theme): Frustration – often from saying yes to the wrong things

Fast learners with the stamina of a Generator and the drive of a Manifestor, designed to adjust and evolve quickly.

Strategy: Respond first, inform next
Signature: Satisfaction + Peace – when energy and direction align
Sign of Resistance (Not-Self Theme): Frustration or Anger – usually from moving too fast without response

Guides who see how people and systems work best together, and do well when their perspective is recognised.

Strategy: Wait for recognition before stepping in
Signature: Success – being valued for their insight
Sign of Resistance (Not-Self Theme): Bitterness – when insight isn’t seen or heard

Deeply sensitive to environment, reflecting the emotional and energetic tone of their community.

Strategy: Give major decisions a full lunar cycle
Signature: Surprise – discovering life moment by moment
Sign of Resistance (Not-Self Theme): Disappointment – when environments don’t feel supportive

"To love yourself and to operate correctly as yourself is not, in fact, selfish; it makes an enormous contribution to the well-being of the planet as a whole...". - Ra Uru Hu

Centres

Where energy is consistent or adaptive

Centres in the BodyGraph represent specific domains like communication, identity, instinct, emotion, and will. Defined centres show energetic consistency. Open centres reflect flexibility, sensitivity, and the capacity to learn from others.

Neither is better, simply different ways of relating to life.

Strategy & Authority

Decision-making as a physical process.

Human Design encourages decisions guided by the body’s intelligence rather than the mind’s pressure to “figure it out.” Authority differs for each person: gut response, emotional clarity over time, intuition, or other embodied cues.

This is an practice in noticing what feels true from the inside.

Profiles & Life Themes

The narrative tone of a life.

Profiles describe how a person learns, connects, and participates in the world. Life themes, like the Incarnation Cross, suggest recurring patterns that may shape purpose and contribution.

Like a map of familiar pathways.
